With a desire to bring a thoughtful, wellness-oriented dining experience to Columbia, Kalle LeMone opened Nourish Café and Market. In this Q&A, Kalle shares her journey, favorite menu items, and the joy of nourishing her customers one meal at a time.

Q: Do you have any professional training in the culinary industry?

A: I am not a trained chef. I just love healthy delicious food and learned to cook at home!

More than anything I wanted to create a place where people could eat and trust that every detail and every ingredient is considered for their health. Down to the oils we cook with. (only single-origin extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil)

Q: Where do you like to eat in Columbia?

A: Oh so many Columbia favorites! Barred Owl, Wine Cellar, Irenes, EndWell, Beet Box, Cafe Berlin, Fly Over, Belly...

Q: What’s your current favorite dish(s) on your menu?

A: The Broadway Bowl and Avocado Toast are my go-to. We fly in an organic, gluten-free sourdough from San Fran because the ingredients are tip-top. Every season we partner with local chefs to create seasonal features and of course, I always love those.

Q: What is your favorite part about owning Nourish Café and Market?

A: My favorite part of owning a restaurant is the people. It's cliche but it's true. Many of the customers we attract care about supporting local farmers, sustainable practices, and of course healthy eating. I love meeting new people who are driving through and are shocked that the Midwest has a restaurant like this. I love hearing their stories and where they come from. And I love seeing our regulars. There is such a comfort in that. Humans are amazing and it's an opportunity to truly connect. Another thing I love is knowing that everything we are serving is nourishing the people that come in. They leave feeling good.

“The whole idea for the bar is to bring back cocktails that shift the focus from ‘what kind of new recipes can we make?’ to reviving classic cocktails that emphasize the cool new spirits available today,” Greg said.

While you may be familiar with classic cocktails like Old Fashioneds, Gimlets, or Manhattans, many turn-of-the-century or prohibition-style cocktails fell out of vogue long before many cocktail connoisseurs even began drinking.

“Harry Craddock came up with the Choker in 1930, but he didn’t have access to sherry cask scotch then. We do now, and we can elevate that cocktail with these ingredients,” Greg said.

Popularized in his 1930 recipe guide, “The Savoy Cocktail Book,” famed bartender Harry Craddock originally crafted the Choker using whisky, absinthe, and absinthe bitters. As spirits have progressed over the last century, classic cocktails like these are slowly returning to bar menus, albeit with modified ingredients better suited to today’s palates.

You won’t see popular brand names behind the bar when you visit Belly for dinner or a drink. Instead, you’ll be greeted by unique spirits, liqueur, bitters, garnishes, and more. Each bottle will be selected intentionally to craft something unique and delicious.

“I wanted the ethos at the bar to be ‘Everything we have is there for a reason.’ We chose this spirit for its unique flavor or the story of the family who made it,” Greg said.

With this celebration of classics becoming new again at the bar and local flavors coming to life in the kitchen, Belly’s new dinner experience will have so much to offer to both long-time fans and new diners.

Once a town favorite, The Penguin Piano Bar & Nightclub closed in 2020 after 15 years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Columbia locals would visit the downtown hotspot for drinks, live music, and lively ambiance. It looked like the end for this beloved bar until just last Wednesday, when a teaser photo labeled “2024” was posted by The Penguin themselves on Facebook.

Owner of the original nightclub and The Social Room Jesse Garcia has high hopes for the new and improved Penguin Piano Bar & Nightclub, anticipating a reopening in mid-to-late January of 2024 at its three-story location on Broadway.

“I never thought I’d get the opportunity to do it again,” Garcia says. “It was too good of a deal to pass up. The Penguin 2.0 will be better than the original.”

Eager patrons, whether experiencing The Penguin Piano Bar & Nightclub for the first time or returning for that wave of nostalgia, can anticipate diverse entertainment acts, a larger stage and more seating to enjoy the show, a brand new bar, and, yes, renovated bathrooms.

Be sure to bring an appetite, because Garcia is appointing Chef Louis Marrero to create a full restaurant menu with the quality and flavors of an upscale American grill.

I crave brunch at Sophia’s because I have a serious sweet tooth. The hard decision for me is whether or not I want their Banana Pecan French Toast or their Triple Berry Pancakes. I'm a pancake lover at heart, but it can be hard to pass up the French toast. I have a lot of friends who are savory-minded foodies and Sophia’s offers the best of both worlds. I get my sweet fix and they get endless savory options. And if you’re not into rosé, they always have mimosas.

Why: It’s all about the experience! The charm of Meriwether really steals the show, though. On a cool fall day my husband and I love sitting on the patio and munching on the locally sourced delicious eats. I love to spice it up with a bloody mary because YUM! Best way to re-energize for the bike ride home.

Where: Broadway Brewery

Why: Why? Because it’s freakin’ tasty, that’s why! Broadway Brewery’s house-cured corned beef hash is deliciously salty. Plus, it comes with sourdough and yes, I’m a millennial and like sourdough — shocker. Last, but not least, the pièce de résistance, the hash. THE HASH, MAN. It’s so good. Crispy potatoes and two eggs your way, I prefer over easy. If I’m pulling out all the stops, I love to get a spicy bloody mary to drink, and at Broadway Brewery, you get to pick your toppings. It rules.

Why: Another honorable mention for Cafe Berlin… and rightfully so! There’s really just no way I couldn’t pay my respects to the Anonymous Tacos, given that they’ve been my go-to brunch choice for years. Tacos, for one thing, are my love language — no matter what meal of the day it is. What really gets me every time are the flavors in the fresh veggies, salsa and cilantro in this dish. If they haven’t already bottled and sold their salsa, they need to! I’d have it on hand at all times.

Behind the Scenes: What Top Ten Wines Has in Store

The staff at Top Ten Wines have remained diligent as they plan for the future of their business. Cook Kyle and bartender Khaymen Hoelscher have been working alongside Paul on a massive 18-acre farm in Huntsdale with the end goal of bringing more locally-sourced wines and produce to their menu in downtown Columbia. Currently, they’re working toward turning eight acres of the farm into a bird and pollinator wildflower sanctuary. They’ve planted a variety of trees and plants that will bear elderberries, peaches, nectarines and pears. The working farm wouldn’t be complete without its own vineyard, where they hope to soon create their own wines out of home-grown grapes. None of these endeavors would be possible without the continued support of the community.

Columbia Restaurants Offer Curbside Cocktails During COVID-19

Missouri is permitting curbside cocktails amidst the coronavirus outbreak. The hope is to help restaurants regain the liquor sales that they have lost because of stay-at-home and social distancing orders.

Missouri Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Control announced on Tuesday, April 14, that it is waiving restrictions to permit retailer-packaged alcoholic drinks until May 15. The alcohol containers must be one-time-use,tamper-proof and purchased in conjunction with a meal to meet state guidelines.

Columbia, MO Restaurant Week 2020 Recap

February is well underway, but we're still reminiscing about The District's semi-annual Restaurant Week held January 20 to January 26, 2020.

Our goal? Sneak out of the office for lunch with colleagues and spend time with friends over dinner. With over 25 restaurants participating in the week-long event, we snagged our Restaurant Week Passports and set out to indulge.

On Wednesday after work, we headed to The Roof for a much-deserved glass of wine and happy hour libations. On Thursday, we hit up Addison's for their coriander chili salmon special, and couldn't resist their notorious nachos.

Saturday was spent shopping downtown, followed by an excellent lunch and cocktails at Sake Japanese Bistro & Bar . We devoured steamed gyoza and our favorite Big O Roll with an extra side of unagi, of course. Sake's Restaurant Week cranberry Moscow mule was the perfect end to our day with ginger vodka and beer, fresh cranberries, and garnished with a lime wedge.

The District's Restaurant Week was the perfect reason to brave the cold winter weather and spend some time enjoying the food scene in downtown Columbia, Missouri. Check out the rest of our adventures on Instagram . We're already looking forward to the next Restaurant Week on June 15-21, 2020.
