Sagua La Grande wants you to experience traditional Cuban cuisine in downtown Columbia, MO. Try some hot entrees and sandwiches traditional to Cuba, where manager Katy Ugalde grew up and learned to cook.
Katy Ugalde was born in Sagua La Grande, Cuba. With most of her family in the restaurant business, she grew up learning and experiencing the art of cooking. When she first moved to Dallas, Texas in 1997, she was able to use the skills she learned growing up thanks to a French chef and the owner of Tony’s Wine Warehouse. This gave her a chance to work in an upscale restaurant even though at the time she didn't speak English. Thanks to the compassion shown to her, she was able to learn English and hone her skills even more. In 2010 she moved to Columbia, Missouri. She began working in the kitchen and at the front of the house management. Eventually, she met her future husband in 2012 when they worked together as a management team, and years later they married. Together, they wanted to bring Cuban cuisine to Columbia, and after a few years Katy’s dream of opening up a traditional Cuban restaurant has come true. She named it after the city she was born in; Sagua La Grande Cuban Café. They serve traditional Cuban favorites such as Lechon Asado or Cubano sandwiches.
